After-hours HVAC calls: what actually happens to them
The calls that matter most arrive when nobody is there to take them.

Furnaces don't fail politely at ten in the morning. They fail on the coldest night of the year, on a Sunday, over a long weekend. That's not bad luck — a heating system under maximum load is a heating system most likely to quit, and maximum load happens when it's coldest and everyone's home.
So the calls with the most urgency, the least price sensitivity and the highest ticket arrive in precisely the window most shops don't cover.
Why after-hours callers don't leave messages
Put yourself in the customer's position. It's minus eighteen, the house is getting cold, there's a baby asleep upstairs. You are not going to leave a voicemail and wait. You're going to work down the Google results until a human voice answers.
The shop that answers gets a customer who isn't shopping on price, has an urgent problem, and will very likely become a maintenance customer afterwards. That's the job that's being lost — not an average one.
The options, honestly
On-call rotation
Works, and it's what most established shops do. It costs you in a way that doesn't appear on a P&L: somebody's evening, every evening. It's also the most common reason good techs leave. If you're a two-truck shop, the person on call is you, permanently.
Forward to your cell
The default, and better than nothing. The failure mode is predictable — you're at dinner, at your kid's game, asleep, or already on another call, so it rings out and lands in voicemail anyway. You've moved the problem, not fixed it.
Answering service
Someone picks up. Whether that's worth the per-minute cost depends entirely on what happens next: if they take a message and text it to you, you're still getting woken up, just more reliably. If they can triage a real emergency from a "can you come Tuesday", that's genuinely useful.
Automated answering that books
Answers instantly at any hour, handles the routine "can you come out Tuesday" calls without waking anyone, and escalates a genuine emergency to whoever is on call. The point isn't to remove the human — it's that the human only gets woken for the calls that actually warrant it.
The triage question
Whatever you use, the thing that decides whether it works is triage: can it tell a real emergency from a routine booking? Get that wrong in one direction and you're woken every night for nothing. Wrong in the other and someone with no heat waits until Monday.
Ask any vendor exactly how that decision gets made, and what happens when it's wrong. If they haven't thought about the second half, they haven't run this in the field.
What we can't tell you yet
We're currently running an after-hours call study across the Ontario HVAC shops in our survey to measure what actually happens when you call at night — human, voicemail, or nothing at all. Until that's finished we're not going to quote a number at you, because we'd be guessing and you'd have no way to check.
